Training Events

The joint training for the ESRs will combine specific technical training on system design, reusability, propulsion physics, GNC and sustainability with transferable skill training that is highly relevant for scientific communication, translational research and entrepreneurship.

The overall training objectives are to:

  1. Train excellent scientists with increased individual innovation and creativity potential
  2. Increase entrepreneurship awareness and relevant skills
  3. Increase employability opportunities
  4. Provide at least 500 hours of training, 350 hours on specific topics and 150 hours on transferable skills.

The training program is designed in line with the EU “Principles for Innovative Doctoral Training” and is based on four pillars:

  1. Excellent Individual Research Projects with joint supervision from academia and industy
  2. Joint network-wide training on scientific/technical and transferable skills
  3. Local training activities at the host and degree-awarding institutions
  4. Secondments to different environments for all ESRs.

The methodology of the program is to provide each ESR with a solid theoretical foundation and practical experiences in real-world engineering problems, enabling them to bring launcher system technology to the next level. To make this possible an interdisciplinary approach is used and the involved secondments will ensure that each ESR works both in academia and industry.

The ASCenSIon program has participants from various countries in Europe and the participating companies have premises in different EU countries, enabling international networking and raising social and cultural awareness. To enable collaborative learning, the program has carefully designed joint network-wide training instruments with a focus on 3 International Summer Schools, which will feature lectures from ASCenSIon scientists and industry participants, as well as external experts from outside the consortium and Europe. The content will cover both scientific and technical topics, as well as transferable skills. The main target audience includes participating ESRs, students, industrial representatives, and researchers from participating institutions. The first Summer School will be held in ESA’s Education and Knowledge Management Office and will be tailored to the needs of the ASCenSIon consortium. The second Summer School will feature an "Idea Lab" to train the ESRs' creativity and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. Further, experimentation weeks will provide practical training on scientific and transferable skills. A workshop series by ESCP will cover entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, and communication and Springer will provide author training for the ESRs, while Storyrunner will provide a workshop on communicating science to the general public. The seminars will cover both specific and transferable aspects of ASCenSIon and will be given by experts from the consortium and invitees from outside. Lead player visits will give the ESRs and their supervisors an insight into Europe's space domain and provide new networking connections.

ESA is supporting the ASCenSIon program by offering a course tailored to the needs and all aspects of the consortium, ranging from launchers to payloads. The training course will feature ESA's experts in these fields and will ensure the best possible start for the ESRs at the beginning of their projects. The high quality of the training is ensured by selected experts from ESA, European universities, and the space industry.
